Mission of the UW RFID Lab

The University of Wisconsin-Madison RFID Lab is unique in the nation. It actively involves more than 40 leading companies from the UW RFID Industry Workgroup, plus UW-Madison students and faculty, to help industry stay competitive through RFID technology. This non-commercial, trusted knowledge network participates in applied research, demonstration and education of RFID technology and applications. The UW RFID Lab is also available to individual companies for sponsored company-specific projects.

Why Is Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) Important?

RFID is an automatic identification and data capture technology that transmits information about an object wirelessly using radio waves. RFID will supplement and may eventually replace bar code identification technology. It will create business efficiencies by fundamentally changing the way products are tracked through the supply chain without requiring human interaction. Wal-Mart, the U.S. Department of Defense and several large retailers have mandated RFID adoption by their suppliers. RFID applications are also growing in a number of other industries - airlines, pharmaceuticals, healthcare and more.
